Asiatic Pennywort

pegaga Scientific Name : Centella asiatica (L.) Urban.
Ordinary Name : Asiatic Pennywort, Gotu Kola
Local Name : Pegaga
Family : Umbelliferae


This plant has been known to use since a long time ago, especially in Ayurvedic treatments in India as well as the treatment of the Chinese and Madagascar. This plant is recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) as one of the most important plants to be protected and cultivated. In Malaysia, although it is used as herbal remedies, but it is more popular as a side dish made of food compared with medicinal herbs.

Plant Features:

Kola is a small plant, their short and creeping. Have long petioles, green. Leaves are round and smooth shape and form palmat. There are three subspecies of C. asiatica at present, namely Kola lettuce, curly and Kola Kola Kola normal or tubers. Kola has many advantages is the Kola tubers.

Plant habit

Pennywort grows wild in all soil conditions. Some need a little shade and some species require full light. Some herbs can be grown in soil that was hard as a rock. In the wild, it can be found in damp areas such as around the pool, at the lake, pool, and can also be found in the paddy fields.

Traditional Practice Nursing

Kola has been used for the treatment of bronchitis (swelling of the air tube in the throat), asthma, gastric secretion, dysentery (diarrhea), kidney problems and dropsy (disease caused by the accumulation of water in the body). This herb has a quick effect to lower blood pressure and is also used as a healing ageless. In Malaysia pennywort serve as a side dish of food among the Malays and used as drinking water coolers for masayarakat Chinese body and used as a tonic in the Indian community. Malay community water pennywort leaves decoction for treatment of leprosy and rheumatism (arthritis). Pennywort leaves are heated to a crisp or pennywort leaf juice mixed with food used to reduce child diarrhea. Some people use as an ingredient demah pennywort leaves or poultice to treat wounds or pennywort leaves are crushed and pasted on the body for the treatment of fever. The juice of the root pennywort drink can wash ulcers. Some people believe that pennywort leaves are good for the mother after contains for ageless.
